People come from all over the world to the small community of Wewahitchka, Florida each spring to taste and take home this locally grown rare, delicious delicacy.
Tupelo honey is harvested exclusively from White Tupelo Gum trees in Florida's Apalachicola River basin. This distinctive variety possesses a floral scent — a hint of rose, some herby, earthy taste, pure sweetness and not a hint of bitterness.
The White Tupelo Gum trees reach 50–75 feet tall and often grow in water several feet deep. Their buds begin the size of small peas, swell into miniature cauliflower shapes, then burst into dozens of tiny spikes. Nectar collects at the base of each spike — a design nature perfected for beekeepers.
Tupelo honey was brought into the spotlight in the 1997 Peter Fonda film "Ulee's Gold," a story about a Wewahitchka beekeeper and his family that helped establish the region's reputation as the Tupelo Honey Capital of the World.
